Diabetes: Live with it? Have early signs?

Updated: Mar 2, 2023

Diabetes treatment — and diabetes prevention — have come a long way! Let the ParTNers Center help you manage or prevent it.

If you live with diabetes

There are new medications that can get you to your goal blood sugar and A1c readings. These new meds can also help with issues like weight loss, making it easier to achieve better blood sugar control.

Why is good blood sugar control important? It lowers your risk for dangerous diabetes-related complications like chronic kidney disease, which is a gradual loss of kidney function. Did you know that one in three adults with diabetes has kidney disease? Both type 1 and type 2 diabetes can cause kidney disease.

Regular blood and urine testing is your best chance for identifying kidney disease early. The ParTNers Center can perform these tests. Also, be sure to take advantage of the diabetes resources available to you (listed below).

March is National Kidney Month | March 28 is Diabetes Alert Day

If you haven’t been diagnosed with diabetes but have certain risk factors

Getting tested should be a priority. With early treatment, it’s possible to avoid developing this chronic disease.

You might be at risk for diabetes if you:

  • Are overweight

  • Are 45 years or older

  • Have a parent or sibling with type 2 diabetes

  • Are not physically active at least three times a week

  • Had gestational diabetes (diabetes during pregnancy) or gave birth to a baby that weighed more than nine pounds

  • Are African American, Hispanic/Latino, American Indian, Pacific Islander or Asian American

The ParTNers Center can screen you for diabetes, including early signs, and for chronic kidney disease. Be sure to take advantage of the resources available to you.
